What is AI literacy?

AI literacy is a person's ability to understand what AI can and cannot do, use it responsibly, and judge its output in their own context. It is the baseline that lets someone work with AI safely and well. In the EU it is also a legal expectation for organisations that use AI.

Literacy is more than knowing that AI exists. It includes a working sense of where models are strong, where they fail, how to check a result, and when not to rely on them at all.

Because AI keeps changing, literacy is not a one-time badge. It has to be refreshed through use, which is why building it through practice holds up better than a single briefing.
