AI SKILLS MATRIX
UPDATED AUGUST 2026

What is an AI skills matrix, and how do you build one?

An AI skills matrix is a simple map of who on a team can do what with AI, and how well. You build one by naming the AI-related tasks that matter for each role, then recording each person's real, demonstrated ability against them rather than a self-rating.

A matrix is only as good as its inputs. Filled in from self-assessment, it flatters everyone and helps no one. Filled in from real work, it shows a leader exactly where the strength and the gaps are.

Keep it live. AI skills move quickly, so a matrix frozen at one moment is stale within a quarter. Tie it to ongoing practice and it stays a true picture instead of a one-time survey.

Usually HR or L&D, working with team leads. The key is that the entries come from evidence of real work, not from people grading themselves.
